Emergency crews took a critically burned man to Straub Clinic & Hospital after neighbors pulled him out of his burning third-floor Moiliili condominium Tuesday evening.
Emergency Medical Services reported the man was in extremely critical condition.
The fire call came in at 7:21 p.m., said Fire Department spokesman Capt. Gary Lum. The fire was reported to be in the multistory building Kaualana Manor I, at 1941 Church Lane.
The fire was brought under control about 7:35 p.m., Lum said. The condo is an older building that is not required to have fire sprinklers, he said.
Eight firetrucks responded to the two-alarm blaze.
A man in his 50s was rushed to Straub in critical condition with second- and third-degree burns over 90 percent to 100 percent of his body, according to an Emergency Medical Services radio transmission.
Next-door neighbor Calvin Silva, 65, identified the victim as Glen Doike.
Silva said he went to the burning apartment after hearing people screaming “fire” and then heard popping noises.
When he got there, the door was unlocked and he opened the door and screamed at the man to get out, Silva said. Silva shot a fire extinguisher inside, and all of a sudden the door slammed shut, and it was locked, he said.
Mario Di Lello said fellow neighbor Martin Bayer, 37, kicked down the door and dragged the victim out of the burning unit.
“He was the hero,” Di Lello said.
Bayer said that when he got there, the door was closed and the door handle was hot so he kicked the door open.
The apartment was full of smoke, Bayer said, and when he looked down he saw someone about 7 to 8 feet inside and yelled at Silva for a flashlight.
They found the man, naked, and Bayer grabbed him by the legs and pulled him out of the doorway with Silva’s help.
Bayer said he took a hose and started spraying water into the apartment.
