Suspect held in death of Makakilo man
Police arrested a 27-year-old convicted felon on suspicion of second-degree murder in the death of 29-year-old Albert Meyer of Makakilo.
The suspect was arrested Monday at 84-675 Lahaina St. in Makaha and remains under investigation for the murder. He was also arrested on suspicion of abuse and kidnapping.
At 8:45 p.m. Thursday, Meyer was found unconscious several blocks from his home on a sidewalk of Hookomo Street, apparently the victim of an assault. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition with substantial bodily injuries, and died Saturday, police said.
The suspect has a criminal record, having been convicted of two felony drug charges and of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and misdemeanor assault.
Neighbor Gary Carvalho said he was shocked to learn of Meyer’s death.
"Nobody should have gone down that way," he said.
Meyer was a mischievous kid, but good to him and his family, and always there to offer help, he said.
On Sept. 24 a judge granted Meyer a deferral of a guilty plea in a second-degree theft case, which would have been kept off his record if he followed the terms of his release.
Historic building evacuated due to smoke
The historic McCandless Building downtown was evacuated briefly Monday morning when smoke was reported in the five-story building.
At 8:56 a.m. firefighters were called to investigate a report of smoke at 925 Bethel St. The problem was initially traced to an equipment malfunction in a fifth-floor maintenance room.
No one was affected by the smoke, and no flames were reported, said Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman. Occupants were allowed back into the building just before 9:30 a.m.
The building was erected in 1906 by John and Link McCandless. A fifth story was added in 1914.
