Camanse-Stevens’ streak intact
There are different mathematical formulas for measuring efficiency.
But there’s nothing like perfection — as in zero interceptions in 165 pass attempts, by Kamehameha senior quarterback Makoa Camanse-Stevens. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound two-sport athlete has tossed 12 touchdown passes and racked up 1,187 yards. In seven games, including four against Top 10 foes, not a single pick.
No other season-long starting quarterback in the state can claim that. One passer who comes close is Punahou’s Larry "Tui" Tuileta, who has just one pick in 130 attempts.
Kealakehe’s rumblin’ big back
The ground nearly shakes every time David Fangupo carries a football.
The 6-foot-2, 348-pound running back is part of Kealakehe’s throwback revolution under Sam Papalii.
The retro attack — 405 rushing yards in a win over Waiakea over the weekend — has made a rushing star out of quarterback Jordan Cristobal.
Even slotback Lennox Jones and wide receiver Giuseppe Zapatoliva have produced big numbers out of the backfield.
But it goes back to size and mobility.
Fangupo has scored three touchdowns in his past three games, which includes a 105-yard performance against Hilo, and a 146-yard effort against Waiakea. Impressive work for Fangupo, who also plays defensive tackle.
He played at Kealakehe for two years before his family moved to the Kohala district. Since returning, Fangupo has dropped 32 pounds.
"If he got in shape, he could play anywhere in college," said Papalii, a former Division I college assistant coach and recruiter. "If someone believes in him, he’s a diamond in the rough. He’s an NFL fullback at 280 or 290 if he gets in shape. He doesn’t even know how good he can be."
Timing is everything
When the Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10 votes were tallied Monday morning, voters didn’t have the luxury of knowing who won that night’s Kamehameha-Punahou tiebreaker match.
So, in effect, the first-place votes in this morning’s poll reflect who the panel believed would win the match, which would break a tie and give the winner the league’s first-round title.
