Hawaii defensive tackle Geordon Hanohano is retiring from college football after being diagnosed with a neck stinger, UH coach Norm Chow confirmed this morning.

‘It’s heartbreaking, very heartbreaking,” Chow said. “He’s a good player and a good, young man.”

Hanohano suffered the injured, which is a nerve compression, in the first quarter of the Warriors’ 47-0 road loss to Brigham Young this past weekend.

The injury does not require surgery. But it was Hanohano’s second stinger of his UH career, and he was advised he would risk severe medical problems if he continued to play.

Hanohano’s UH career comes to an end because he redshirted as a freshman in 2008 and has appeared in too many games this season to apply for a medical hardship.

Hanohano is a 2008 Saint Louis School graduate.
