When Tom Holowach steps out from behind the Paliku Theatre stage curtain — speaking in character as a 1920s Berlin cabaret emcee — to make the standard announcements about not texting or using cellphones during the performance, he conveys as well the feeling that "Broadway @ Paliku: 10 Years of ‘Bright’ Lights" is going to be something imaginative and special.
The revue commemorates 10 years of ambitious musical theater presented by Holowach, manager of the Windward Community College facility, and director Ronald E. Bright, an iconic figure in local musical theater for decades. The cast is representative of the shows: It includes Broadway and national touring professionals, professional-caliber performers with extensive local credits, talented amateurs, and students who could be on their way to professional careers if they keep studying their craft.
Highlight performances in Act 1 include Mary Gutzi capturing every emotional nuance in "I Dreamed a Dream" ("Les Miserables") and Jade Stice doing similarly fine work with "Don’t Cry for Me Argentina" ("Evita").
Act 2 has Cathy Foy, back from her stint as Bloody Mary in the national touring company of "South Pacific," putting her personal stamp on "Bali Ha’i." There’s also Leonard Villanueva, superb as the Engineer in "Miss Saigon" at Paliku in 2008, radiating sleazy exuberance as he re-creates that memorable performance with "The American Dream."
Gutzi returns as a soloist in Act 2 for a show-stopping rendition of "Memory" ("Cats") and shows for a second time how a professional stage performer can illuminate every facet of a song without a false move or excess theatrics.

Holowach announces at the start of the show that it will be all music with "none of the acting," but of course "the acting" is in there as well. Take note of the quick moment of recognition exchanged between Foy and Douglas Scheer in "Our Children" ("Ragtime"), their rambunctious interplay as they lead the cast through "Master of the House" ("Les Miserables") and the tumultuous emotions that surge through Stice’s powerful performance as Mama Rose in "Rose’s Turn" ("Gypsy").
Andrew Doan captures with eerie realism the seething anger of a man who feels stigmatized by those around him with "Lonely Room" ("Oklahoma").
Full-stage choreography, an important part of Bright’s shows at Paliku, adds pizazz when Tori Anguay joins singer-dancers Gabe Wright, Villanueva, Allan Lau and the male ensemble in "Brotherhood of Man" ("How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying").
As for props, watch for the large rat Jessica Cruz catches in the middle of her star number singing amid the dancers in "Good Morning, Baltimore" ("Hairspray").
