Visitor dies after swim off Portlock
A 27-year-old visitor pulled unconscious from waters off Portlock Saturday afternoon has died.
The man was reportedly swimming near the popular but dangerous Spitting Caves area but was unable to climb out of the water, according to Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Gary Lum.
Ocean Safety personnel were alerted about 4 p.m. and found the man about 30 yards offshore. They attempted CPR as they brought him back to shore.
He was transported by paramedics to an area hospital, where he later died.
Ailing UH swimmer dies at age 19
University of Hawaii swimmer "Peter" Frank Chi died early Saturday from an apparent cardiac arrest.
Chi, 19, was found unresponsive in his dorm room and was transported to Straub Clinic and Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to the university, Chi had been previously diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome, a heart disorder.
UH swimming head coach Victor Wales, in a news release, called Chi "an outstanding student athlete and even more importantly a great person."
Chi was a 2010 graduate of Waiakea High School and a one-time walk-on for UH. On Friday, he competed in UH’s season-opening meet agains BYU, finishing fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke. At last year’s Ahahui Koa Anuenue scholarship dinner, Chi was awarded the Inspiration Award in recognition of how he had dealt with his condition.
Fleeing suspect breaks guard’s leg
A 20-year-old Honolulu man fleeing from police Saturday morning ran into a security guard, breaking the guard’s leg, police said.
Police said the suspect was allegedly involved in a fight in the Waikiki area before the incident and resisted arrest by running from police into a nearby hotel.
After a brief struggle, he was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest shortly before 2 a.m. near 2211 Ala Wai Blvd., police said.
The suspect and the 58-year-old security guard were both taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Injured hiker lifted from Koko Crater
An 18-year-old man was transported in serious condition to a trauma center early Saturday morning after falling and hitting his head while hiking the Koko Crater trail, an Emergency Medical Services supervisor said.
A fire rescue crew hiked to the man’s location, immobilized him and loaded him into a helicopter for transport, Capt. Gary Lum said.
Lum said the man was walking down the trail slightly before 7 a.m. when he tripped and fell and struck his head.
Moanalua Valley brush fire is out
Honolulu firefighters spent Saturday afternoon battling a hard-to-reach brush fire in the back of Moanalua Valley.
Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Gary Lum said firefighters had to be airlifted to the otherwise inaccessible section valley.
The fire was reported just after noon and blackened more than 10 acres before it was contained about 3:20 p.m. HFD ceased operations in the area around 6:15 p.m.
