Corbett hopes Sandusky sentence comforts victims

HARRISBURG, Pa. » Gov. Tom Corbett says he hopes the long prison sentence imposed on Jerry Sandusky is a just reward for his victims’ trust in the justice system.

Corbett responded today to the 30- to 60-year sentence that the former Penn State assistant football coach received for his conviction on 45 counts of child sexual abuse. The sentence amounts to life in prison for the 68-year-old Sandusky.

Corbett, who was Pennsylvania’s attorney general when the state investigation was launched in 2009, says the victims’ testimony and prosecutors’ hard work resulted in an “airtight” case against Sandusky.

Sandusky was convicted of molesting 10 boys over 15 years. Corbett said the victims who testified against Sandusky in open court displayed courage in the face of tremendous pressure and national publicity.
