Weather gods bring vog, waves
Could the weather on Oahu be any worse than it is right now? Yes, but it still has been awful how climate and geology have conspired to make life miserable for us over past few days.
It’s been hot and really humid, thanks to those barely blowing Kona winds from the south.
Worse, those winds have been bringing with them toxic vog from Kilauea volcano on Hawaii island, burning our eyes and making Oahu look like Los Angeles during the height of its smoggiest years. Could somebody please go turn that thing off?
Meanwhile, massive waves are taking the fun out of casual beachgoing on the north and west shores, though not everybody is upset about that. Surfers are jazzed. But for the rest of us, stay out of the water if you’re unfamiliar with strong undercurrents and waves as big as houses.
Airlines get gifts for the holidays
So your friends or relatives haven’t yet booked a plane reservation for that holiday trip they plan to take in the islands? Don’t know how to break this to them, but it’s going to cost, especially if they’re arriving in the week or so ahead of Christmas.
Even from the West Coast, usually considered a relatively short jaunt, we used Bing.com to track fares for several major cities and found most of the round-trip flights going in the $900-$1,000 range. Even at that throat-clutching level, there were perky little reminders posted alongside: "Two tickets left at this price!"
That’s got to be good news for the tourism industry. A very Merry Christmas to us. Tourists: Hope you did your airline shopping early.
