ASHBURN, Va. » There was a major sigh of relief at Redskins Park Wednesday when Washington rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III practiced and showed no effects from a mild concussion.
Barring any unexpected setbacks between now and Sunday, Griffin will start against the visiting Minnesota Vikings.
“It’s a serious issue, but I felt fine when I left the locker room” after being injured in Sunday’s game against Atlanta, Griffin said. “I went home, watched some TV and kinda just relaxed. I haven’t had any symptoms at all. Practice went good. I felt sharp. I felt good. No symptoms of a concussion: no dizziness or (feeling) off-balance. I feel right today. We’ll see what happens come Sunday.”
Against the Falcons, Griffin was hit by Atlanta linebacker Sean Weatherspoon while scrambling on third-and-goal in a 7-7 game, which the Redskins’ lost 24-17.
Griffin, who did some cardio work and some throwing on Tuesday and will get evaluated every day before he’s cleared for full contact, joked that his only symptom is “irritability” from continually being asked the same questions by the Redskins’ medical staff to see how he’s doing.
Fujita berates Goodell
With as much purpose as any tackle he’s ever made, Scott Fujita delivered a shot to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Angered by Goodell’s handling of the New Orleans Saints’ bounties scandal, Fujita accused the commissioner of misusing his power, questioned his record on player safety, and the Browns linebacker vowed to keep fighting to clear his name.
“The commissioner says he is disappointed in me,” Fujita said. “The truth is, I’m disappointed in him.”
Sanchez still Jets’ starter
Mark Sanchez stood at his locker for 15 minutes and answered every question carefully, making it clear he still believes he’s the long-term solution at quarterback for the New York Jets.
A few minutes later, Tim Tebow again talked about how he wants to make the most of every opportunity he gets, skillfully dancing around every attempt to bait him into admitting that he’s frustrated with his limited role.
Coach Rex Ryan insisted that no switch to Tebow is coming. So, when he was pressed Wednesday about his qualifier — “this week” — Ryan got slightly testy.
“What do you want me to say?” Ryan asked. “He’s our starter. He’s our starter this week.”
