Wine tasting will benefit Hospice Hawaii
Hospice Hawaii’s Na Hoa Malama Benefit Fundraiser, "Journey to Napa," will pay tribute on Nov. 17 to "heroes" Harry Seisho Nakasone, who was a grand master of the uta-sanshin (an Okinawan traditional string instrument), and Bill Kaiwa, who was a Waikiki entertainer, recording artist and conservator of traditional Hawaiian music.
Nakasone, who died in March 2011 at the age of 99, was named a National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Fellow in 1991.
Kaiwa, who died in December at age 78, became known as a recording artist in the early 1960s when he recorded "Boy from Laupahoehoe," the song that became his musical signature.
The annual wine-tasting benefit from 6 to 10 p.m. at Waialae Country Club will pair Napa Valley wines with a gourmet dinner, silent auction and celebration of Hospice Hawaii’s "Heroes and Friends." The latter includes Divas Doing Good, the GIFT Foundation, Arcadia and its family of companies, and Dr. Sze Mei Chung, all of whom will be recognized for their support of Hospice Hawaii and their contributions to end-of-life care and issues.
Proceeds will benefit the agency’s programs and services.
