A utility pole leaned precariously as a result of a van that crashed into a Waimanalo house this morning. The driver was taken to the hospital in serious condition. About 700 area residents were left without power. No one in the house was injured.

Traffic is being rerouted to side streets this morning around the area of 41-0848 Kalanianaole Highway because of a motor vehicle accident. Motorists should take alternate routes or leave earlier if possible.

A 21-year-old man apparently drove a van into a house in Waimanalo across from the 7-Eleven, prompting police to close off a section of the highway.

Police said the 3:27 a.m. crash caused power lines to fall onto the roadway.

The man was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Traffic was being re-routed to Walea Street and Puuone Street on the makai side of Kalanianaole Highway and Oluolu Street on the mauka side of the highway.

The crash knocked over a utility pole on Wailea Street and initially left 1,500 area residents without power.

Crews have restored power to all but 14 households. The remaining customers without electricity will have to wait until workers finish repairing the pole, according to Hawaiian Electric Co. spokesman Darren Pai.
