Oktoberfest event benefits Shriners
It’s "chicken dance" time Saturday as the Aloha Temple Shriners hold an Oktoberfest fundraiser to fly in out-of-state patients to Shriners Hospital for Children in Honolulu.
The menu, to be prepared by Chef Nicolas "Nico" Chaize, will feature grilled bratwurst with sauerkraut, roasted dark-beer-marinated chicken, braised purple cabbage, jumbo pretzels, German potato salad and apple strudel.
The fundraiser will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. at Nico’s Pier 38, 1133 N. Nimitz Highway.
The Shriners Clowns will put on a children’s program from 3:30 to 5 p.m., and music will be provided by the Edelweiss Band and the Potentate’s Band.

Enjoy Burmese cuisine with chef Maw
Chef Aye Aye Maw, who was recently featured on the Cooking Channel’s "Eden Eats" program, will prepare a Burmese meal at a pop-up dinner Saturday at the Lemongrass Cafe.
The menu will include Chana Bean Salad with Baby Potatoes spiced with curry leaves, Bayar Kyaw (crispy pea flour fritters with dipping sauce), Mixed Vegetable Curry and Myanmar-style Biriyani Rice (curried rice with chicken). Vegetarian alternatives will be available on request, and hot milk tea will also be served.
The Cooking Channel show featuring Maw will be screened during the dinner, which starts at 6 p.m. in the Pacific Gateway Center, 83 N. King St.

Help kids via Halloween fundraiser
Get decked out in your Halloween finest and head to Windward YMCA’s Annual Hallo-Wine Tasting and Silent Auction on Oct. 27.
Enjoy heavy pupu and wines from Tamura’s Fine Wine & Liquors, and help send children from low-income families to the Y’s Camp Erdman for a week.
The event runs 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Koolau Ballroom Atrium; Windward YMCA is at 1200 Kailua Road.

Madre Chocolate wins silver award
Madre Chocolate’s Triple Cacao bar won the World Silver Medal in the Bars — Flavored dark chocolate category at the International Chocolate Awards 2012 in London last week.
The Kailua chocolate maker was one of only four U.S. companies to win World Finals medals and, with only two years in the business, the youngest.
The World Finals was held Oct. 9 to 11.

Popular Dessert Fantasy returns
Folks with a serious sweet tooth and a generous heart won’t want to miss the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii’s popular Dessert Fantasy fundraiser Nov. 4.
The event boasts more than 50 desserts, live entertainment and a silent auction, and guests are encouraged to vote for their favorite treats alongside professional judges.
The benefit runs 1 to 3 p.m. at the Grand Ballroom at Pacific Beach Hotel, 2490 Kalakaua Ave.

Chef Mavro among best in seafood
Chef Mavro was named one of the nation’s top 10 seafood restaurants this year by Gayot, the reviewer of restaurants and hotels worldwide.
