Another shark spotted in Nanakuli
Honolulu Ocean Safety lifeguards warned the public to stay out of the water and posted shark warning signs late Tuesday afternoon after sighting an 8-foot shark at Nanakuli Beach Park.
"Lifeguards will stay on until sunset to warn the public," city spokeswoman Shayne Enright said. The shark was seen at about 5 p.m.
Enright said the shark was nonaggressive.
It was the second shark sighting in Nanakuli in as many days.
Lifeguards reported a 10-foot shark, acting aggressive and jumping out of the water, on Monday at Nanakuli Beach Park.
Flags at state offices to lower for Specter
Gov. Neil Abercrombie is ordering all U.S. and state flags at the state offices and Hawaii National Guard grounds to be flown at half-staff in honor of former Sen. Arlen Specter from Pennsylvania, who died during the weekend.
The order is in effect from sunrise to sunset Tuesday, the day of Specter’s funeral in Penn Valley, Pa.
Abercrombie’s order comes after President Barack Obama issued a proclamation doing the same for all U.S. flags at federal buildings and grounds.
Specter died Sunday at age 82 after spending much of his career in the U.S. Senate warning of the dangers of political intolerance.
Homeless man held on $511K bail in assault
Bail for a homeless man charged with attempted murder has been increased to more than a half-million dollars.
The Maui News said Thomas Abraham, 38, is accused of assaulting a man in a restroom at Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center last week.
His bail was set at $511,000 on Monday when he made an initial appearance in Wailuku District Court.
Police said the assault took place Friday afternoon. Security officers at the shopping mall intervened as Abraham sat on a 42-year-old victim’s chest and choked him, police said. The man was attacked from behind, police said, with Abraham punching and using a pair of scissors to stab the victim in the back of the head.
The man was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.
County increases Koloa bus route, cuts 2 others
The Kauai County Transportation Agency will increase the frequency of buses on one Koloa route and eliminate two other routes, the county announced. Changes take effect Oct. 28.
The Koloa Shuttle Route 30 bus will run more frequently. On weekdays it will run every hour, from 6:15 a.m. to 9:15 p.m. On weekends and holidays, except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day, it will run at 7:15, 8:15, 9:15 and 11:15 a.m., and 1:15, 3:15 and 5:15 p.m.
Two mainline routes, Nos. 300 and 350, will be eliminated.
"With the increased frequency in the shuttle, it will no longer be necessary to have these mainline routes service the South Shore," said Celia Mahikoa, county executive on transportation.
