Suspect arrested in pair of bank robberies
A 46-year-old man with no local address remained in police custody Wednesday night pending charges for two bank robberies.
Honolulu CrimeStoppers Coordinator Kim Buffett said police were expected to hold a lineup Wednesday night for witnesses in the two robberies to positively identify the suspect.
The 46-year-old is suspected of robbing the Kapiolani Boulevard branch of American Savings Bank and the Aina Haina branch of Territorial Savings Bank.
The man in Monday’s Territorial bank robbery is described as 5-foot-6, 300 to 350 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes and a large tattoo on his left forearm.
On Tuesday, a similar-looking man entered the American Savings Bank branch at 12:30 p.m., demanded money and fled after receiving it, police said.
Police later found him and arrested him on suspicion of two counts of second-degree robbery.
Driver crashes van into Waimanalo house
A 21-year-old man apparently drove a van into a house in Waimanalo across Kalanianaole Highway from the 7-Eleven early Wednesday, prompting police to close off a section of the highway.
Police said the 3:27 a.m. crash in the area of 41-0848 Kalanianaole Highway caused power lines to fall onto the roadway.
The man was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
Traffic was rerouted to Walea Street and Puuone Street on the makai side of Kalanianaole Highway and Oluolu Street on the mauka side of the highway.
The crash knocked over a utility pole on Wailea Street and initially left 1,500 area residents without power.
