Shiraki selected to FLAME program
Kailua’s Emily Shiraki, a Trinity University senior, is one of 15 "minority student leaders" from colleges around the country chosen by the U.S. Olympic Committee to participate in this year’s FLAME (Finding Leaders Among Minorities Everywhere) Program.
The five-day series of seminars and workshops with U.S. Olympians and Paralympians will be at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., through Tuesday.
Now in its 19th year, FLAME is designed to "inspire minority college students to cultivate their desire to succeed and rise above the ordinary." It provides students with an in-depth look at the Olympic Movement and personal exploration of the Olympic ideals of excellence, friendship and respect. It also offers a pathway to become involved in the Olympic Movement, through the USOC’s internship program or other career and volunteer opportunities.
Students chosen have already demonstrated a "pursuit of excellence within their own communities." Shiraki, an ‘Iolani graduate, is a two-time conference pole vault champion who works with several groups including Sports Kids Rock and the San Antonio Health Collaborative.
FLAME speakers this year include Olympic silver medalist Judi Brown Clarke, three-time Olympians Cindy Stinger and Katrina McClain and Walt Glover, USOC chief financial officer. Keynote speaker is Teresa Edwards, a five-time Olympic medalist in basketball.
