A man died Friday after a truck driven by another man who may have been asleep at the wheel crashed into his truck on Kaukonahua Road in Waialua.

A 52-year-old man killed in a crash in Waialua Friday was identified as Kenton Kuwada of Waialua, according to the medical examiner¹s office.

The crash occurred on Kaukonahua Road above Thompson Corner where the roadway joins Farrington Highway.

At about 10:28 a.m. Friday, Kuwada was traveling southbound on Kaukonahua Road in a white 1995 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck when a 42-year-old Waialua man traveling northbound in a blue 2001 Ford Ranger pickup truck crossed the center line and struck the vehicle Kuwada was operating.

Kuwada sustained internal injuries and was taken to Queen¹s Medical Center in critical condition where he later died. His passenger, a 76-year-old Waialua woman, was transported to the same hospital in critical condition and later upgraded to serious condition.

Police had said the driver of the Ford Ranger may have fallen asleep when he crossed the center line.

Kuwada¹s death is the 48th traffic-related fatality compared to 46 at the same time last year.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
