Mason a shot short in PGA Tour qualifier
Leilehua graduate Nick Mason came up a shot short at the PGA Tour first stage qualifying in Madison, Miss., on Friday. Mason was 6 under par going into the final round, but closed with a 4-over 74 to finish at 278 and tie for 19th. The top 16 and ties — at 277 — advanced to second stage.
Hilo’s Jarett Hamamoto (69—283) also failed to advance. He tied for 33rd, a shot ahead of Argentina’s Angel Cabrera, who has won two majors.
Chan Kim, who moved to Arizona after winning the 2006 Hawaii state high school championship, advanced in the first stage at Dayton, Nev. Kim tied for 17th after shooting a final-round 67. His four-day total was 5-under 283. Tony Finau, who represents Turtle Bay, also finished at 283 and advanced after a final-round 74.
Eric Dugas, a Waikoloa pro playing out of South Boston, Mass., advanced on the number at The Club at Irish Creek, in Kannapolis, N.C. Dugas fired rounds of 73-66-71-69 to finish at 5-under 279. He ended up in a five-way tie for 16th, the final qualifying spot.
There are eight more first stage qualifiers next week. Qualifiers move on to six second stage events next month. The 90-hole final qualifying stage is Nov. 28-Dec. 3.
2 UH tennis players advance in regional
University of Hawaii men’s tennis players Jonathan Brooklyn and David Schuster advanced to the third round of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships at UC Irvine’s campus Friday.
Brooklyn defeated UCLA’s Ryoto Tachi 6-7, 7-5, 6-2 and Schuster rallied from a first set defeat to beat Cal Poly’s Marco Comuzzo 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Both players earned first-round byes and will play today for a spot in the quarterfinals. Hawaii’s Chas Okamoto, Nils Schuhmann and Dmytro Kovalyov suffered losses and did not make the cut for the third round.
Schuser will face USC’s Yannick Hanfmann, while Brooklyn will play UC Irvine’s Jacob Jung.
BYU-Hawaii improves to 9-0 in PacWest
Brigham Young-Hawaii hit .478 for the night to dominate Hawaii-Hilo 25-23, 25-20, 25-9 in a Pacific West Conference women’s volleyball match Friday in Laie.
Stella Chen had 19 kills and nine digs to lead the Seasiders, 14-2 overall and 9-0 in the PacWest. Freshman Bria Morgan had 18 kills for the Vulcans, 4-14 and 4-8.
Freshmen lead HPU sweep of Chaminade
Freshmen Amanda Moriarty and Kasey Thompson had 11 kills each to lead Hawaii Pacific to a sweep of Chaminade in a Pacific West Conference women’s volleyball match Friday at St. Andrew’s Priory.
HPU (10-7 overall and 4-5 in conference) won 25-23, 25-20, 25-18. The Silverswords slipped to 6-14 and 3-9.
