ATV collision with deer sends Maui man to hospital

A 45-year-old Kihei man was taken to the hospital Monday morning after the ATV he was driving struck a deer on Maui.

Medics responding to a call of an ATV rollover in Wailea found a man with possible chest, arm and leg injuries after the ATV he was driving collided with a deer, according to county spokesman Ryan Joslin.

Apparently spooked by the approaching vehicle, the deer bolted across the path of the ATV, getting its antlers entangled in the brush guard, which caused the vehicle to flip over and land on top of the man, Joslin said.

The man was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in serious but stable condition. He was wearing a helmet.

The accident occured a day before State Farm Insurance released a study naming Hawaii as the state where drivers are least likely to have a confrontation with a deer.

There was no word on the condition of the deer.
