While seven states are responsible for 52 percent of online shopping in the U.S., shoppers in Hawaii, Alaska, Idaho and Wyoming spend more on each purchase.

A study of the online shopping habits of 97 million American shoppers by New York-based Jirafe, found that while Alaska makes up only 0.3 percent of online shopping in the country, its average transaction size was $160; Idaho is responsible for 0.65 percent of U.S. e-commerce activity with an average transaction of $156; Hawaii makes up 0.4 percent with a transaction average of $144, and Wyoming is at 0.2 percent at a $130 per-transaction average.

Jirafe executive Ken Huang theorizes that in such sparsely populated states, the higher purchases may make up for the distance between residential areas and larger stores.

California does the most online shopping at 13.3 percent of U.S. cyber-buys, with a per-transaction average of $123.
