Maui man hurt in collision of ATV and deer
A 45-year-old Kihei, Maui, man was taken to a hospital Monday morning after he hit a deer with the all-terrain vehicle he was driving.
Medical personnel responding to a call of an ATV rollover in Wailea found a man with possible chest, arm and leg injuries after the ATV he was driving collided with a deer, county spokesman Ryan Joslin said.
The deer was apparently spooked by the approaching vehicle and bolted across the path of the ATV, getting its antlers tangled in the brush guard, which caused the vehicle to flip over and land on top of the man, Joslin said.
Medics took the man to Maui Memorial Medical Center in serious but stable condition. He was wearing a helmet.
The accident happened a day before State Farm Insurance released a study naming Hawaii as the state where drivers are least likely to have a confrontation with a deer.
There was no word on the condition of the deer.
