Police blocked off part of Lumiaina Street in Waikele this morning while they investigated a fatal pedestrian accident.

A 61-year-old woman died from internal injuries after she was struck while walking in Waikele Friday morning.

The woman was in a marked crosswalk at Lumiaina Street about 7 a.m. when she was struck by a Hummer traveling east at the intersection that connects Waikele Premium Outlets and Waikele Shopping Center, said Lt. Robert Towne of the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division.

Eastbound lanes of Lumiaina near the shopping center reopened after being closed for more than an hour as HPD investigated the scene.

The victim is a woman staying with family in Waikele but is from Washington state, Towne said. She died at Pali Momi Medical Center shortly after being taken there by an emergency crew, he said.

The driver of the Hummer is a 40-year-old Waipahu woman, he said. Speed and alcohol are not considered factors.

The death was the 50th recorded on Oahu roads so far this year. There were 46 fatals at this time in 2011.
