University of Hawaii and Aloha Stadium officials met on Thursday to discuss the feasibility of the Warriors playing a 13th regular-season game this year.
"There’s still a chance this can happen," UH coach Norm Chow said. "It’s not a dead issue in any way."
In July, Temple officials contacted Chow about the possibility of being added to the 2012 regular-season schedule.
The so-called Hawaii exemption allows UH and a mainland team playing in Hawaii an extra game beyond the NCAA’s limit of 12 regular-season games. The Warriors have 12 games scheduled this season. Temple has 11 games.
The proposal is for Temple and UH to meet on Saturday, Dec. 8, at Aloha Stadium. UH has a men’s basketball game that night in the Stan Sheriff Center. Aloha Stadium is booked that day for a Pop Warner event.
There have been preliminary negotiations with the Pop Warner organizers. Also, UH would be agreeable to playing the football game in the afternoon to avoid a scheduling conflict with basketball.
Aside from logistics, which are far from being finalized, a major obstacle is whether the game is fiscally possible. Temple and UH are negotiating an appearance fee. What’s more, UH has to work on arrangements with season-ticket holders.
Chow said he has been told the game must at least break even financially.
Chow said the extra game would be good for the players and the UH fans.
"It’s good to think out of the box," Chow said. "We’ll see what happens."
62 on travel roster
The Warriors were scheduled to arrive in Los Angeles last night on the first leg of a road trip for Saturday’s game against Colorado State.
They will depart L.A. this afternoon on a charter flight to Fort Collins, where they will have a walk-through practice at CSU’s Hughes Stadium.
Temperatures are expected to be in the 40s at kickoff.
"That shouldn’t matter," Chow said. "It’s going to be the same weather for both teams."
The Warriors brought 62 players — two fewer than the Mountain West Conference’s travel-roster limit.
Receiver Trevor Davis and linebacker George Daily-Lyles did not make the trip. Davis, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, and Daily-Lyles, who had concussion-like symptoms last week, did not practice this week.
Billy Ray Stutzmann, Scott Harding and Chris Gant will rotate at the two wideout positions.
Running back Joey Iosefa, who missed the past four games because of a foot injury, has been medically cleared and will play.
Sean Shigematsu, who has an ankle injury, is on the travel roster.
