Hirono out-raises Lingle so far this month
U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono raised more than twice as much money as former Gov. Linda Lingle during the first three weeks of October in their U.S. Senate campaign.
Hirono, a Democrat, raised more than $460,000 between Oct. 1 and 17, according to her latest federal campaign finance report, and more than $5.1 million overall. Lingle, a Republican, brought in more than $206,600 during the same period and has collected more than $5.4 million overall.
Hirono, who leads Lingle in public opinion polls, has raised more money than Lingle in the past two reporting periods. Lingle had the clear fundraising advantage before the August primary.
County seeks colorful cans for decorations
Kauai County says colorful aluminum cans are needed to decorate a tree for the Festival of Lights starting Dec. 7 at the Historic County Building.
The cans would be used to create ornaments for a 9-foot-tall tree called the "If Can, Can" tree, the county said in a news release. About 200 colorful cans are needed and should be empty and not crushed.
"We’re looking for all the different colors of the Hawaiian Sun and Aloha Maid juice cans, bright red Coke cans, energy drink cans, green ginger ale cans, as well as Arizona Green Tea cans," Elizabeth Freeman, festival organizer, said in the release. "If an aluminum can is bright and colorful, we want it."
Freeman hopes to collect the aluminum cans by Nov. 7.
Drop-offs can be made at the County Recycling Office at the Lihue Civic Center, Moikeha Building, Suite 295.

Refuse station reopens after repair work
Normal operations have resumed at the Hanalei refuse transfer station, following completion of a major repair project, Kauai County said Friday.
Repairs were completed Thursday. The mixed-waste service at the facility had been suspended for a few weeks because of repairs to a structural component of the mixed-waste hopper.
Normal hours at all Kauai County transfer stations are 9:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.
