Woman dies after being hit by SUV on Maui

A 21-year-old woman died Sunday night after a sport utility vehicle hit her and another woman while they were walking on the dirt shoulder of a road in Kahu­lui.

Maui police identified the victim as Devon King. She and a 19-year-old woman were struck at 6:52 p.m. by a 1998 Ford Explorer driven by a 27-year-old Kahu­lui man.

The Ford was traveling east on Vevau Street, about 300 feet east of Kane Street, and left the roadway and hit the two pedestrians. Both women were taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center. King died at 9:33 p.m. The 19-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital, but Maui police did not know the extent of her injuries.

Speeding and alcohol are suspected as factors, police said.

It was Maui’s 20th traffic death this year, compared with 16 at the same time last year.

Annual sale to feature rare native plants

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources will hold its annual Arbor Day plant sale on Kauai on Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Pua Loke Nursery, 4396-D Pua Loke Road.

DLNR’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife has conducted the event since 1968. Offerings include federally listed threatened and endangered plants that are native to Hawaii and used for the state’s conservation programs.

This year’s sale will feature several rare native hibiscus species, including the delicate red flowered kokio ula (Hibiscus clayi), and the mao hau hele (Hibiscus brackenridgei), known for its brilliant yellow blossoms.
