Non-drivers will soon have more places to get their state identification cards.

That’s because the state is making the Department of Transportation and the counties responsible for issuing both state identification cards and driver’s licenses.

As of Jan. 2, residents will be able to obtain state identification cards at all driver’s license locations in Honolulu, Maui and Kauai counties — except for satellite city halls.

In Hawaii County, residents may get their identification cards at driver’s license locations in Hilo and Kona.

The attorney general’s office is currently responsible for the identification card program. It issues the cards through the governor’s neighbor island liaison offices and the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center in Honolulu.

The attorney general said Tuesday these offices will stop issuing the cards in mid-December.
