Brianna Hollister led all shooters with a 541 to take medalist honors at the Civilian Marksman Program Hawaii State Air Riflery Championships on Tuesday at Kamehameha-Hawaii. Gavin Au of Leilehua was the top boy at 540, and Waiakea took both team titles.

Hollister was the best shooter on the day it mattered, rising up from eighth place at the ILH championships the week before. She shot 22 points better on Tuesday, mostly because she wasn’t trying to shoot better.

“Today I just thought I will do my best,” Hollister said in a phone interview. “I just tried to have fun. I think the previous week I was too concerned about the outcome and I thought about it too much. I wanted to focus more on how to get the good score rather than the score itself.”

Hollister beat Waiakea’s Karise Kuroda by four points for the girls title, and Au by a single point for the highest score overall. She hit the bull 19 times.

A girl has been the top shooter seven times in the 14 state championships with one tie, but it is the first time it happened since 2009.

Hollister dominated the prone position with a 193 (12 bull’s-eyes), but struggled when the event moved to standing with the fourth-highest score among girls. She said all that she thought during the five minutes between standing ended and kneeling began was that she should have practiced kneeling the day before but ignored it to give her a better chance at standing.

Hollister, however, had the third-highest score in the kneeling at 180 to wrap up the title.

“Practice does matter,” Hollister said. “But you have to practice the right things. I got through the kneeling just by keeping my focus. The coach tells us to never give up on a shot and I tried to do that.”

Hollister, a junior, may have a state title to her credit but not a team title this year. Punahou was never really in contention to defend its championship despite Hollister’s score. Waiakea took the crown behind Kuroda’s second-place finish and the efforts of Crystal Rances (13th), Linsey Kimura (14th), Kellie Iwasaki (18th), Jamie Ikeda (19th) and Karyl-Lin Yamakawa (23rd).

Mid-Pacific finished second, 15 points behind Waiakea.

Leilehua’s Au grabbed onto the boys lead in the prone and held it, shooting a 194 with 10 bulls.

Punahou’s Noah Kwock made a run at him after that, matching Au’s scores in standing (170) and kneeling (176). Au finished at 540, comfortably beating Kwock’s 532. Abraham Sylvester of Waiakea took third at 532, but his effort earned him a piece of the team trophy. Justin Joe Gray (fifth), Tyler Aburamen (10th), Brentson Kinoshita (11th) and Cody Yamada (22nd) helped the Warriors to the sweep.

The Buffanblu were six points short of a repeat, scoring 2,084 to Waiakea’s 2,090.
