Escapee goes up to get out of court building
A man escaped from a cellblock interview room on the third floor of the Circuit Court building Wednesday, apparently by going through the ceiling and air ducts.
Toni Schwartz, spokeswoman for the state Department of Public Safety, said the escape happened at about noon.
The court building on Punchbowl Street was evacuated at about 4 p.m. as sheriff’s deputies conducted a sweep of the courthouse for two escapees. Public safety officials thought two men escaped but found only one of them had gotten away.
Officials found broken ceiling tiles and a slipper in the interview room.
Schwartz identified the escapee as Darius Punimau, who was at the courthouse for a probation revocation hearing.
