Kalihi shows off its ethnic tastes
Learn about the ethnic diversity of Kalihi through food at "A Taste of Kalihi," now in its sixth year.

Burmese menu pops up at cafe
The nonprofit Lemongrass Cafe steps up pop-up offerings this month with a Burmese dinner on Saturday by resident chef Aye Aye Maw and a meal by Bruno Iezzi of Bruno’s Forno on Nov. 18.

» Maw’s dinner ($30) will include Squash Tempura with Signature Sauce, Mango Salad using Burmese Tea Leaf, Coconut Chicken Noodle and Hot Tapioca with Sweet Potato.
» Iezzi’s menu ($45) features a Veggie Tower with Goat Cheese and Truffle Oil on Raw Tomato Puree; Potato Gnocchi with shiitake, portabella and oyster mushrooms in light cream sauce; Herbed Chicken with Roasted Potatoes and Mixed Salad; and passion fruit cheesecake.
Julia chef takes it to the street food
Things will be heating up at fishcake Saturday when chef Lance Kosaka of Cafe Julia demonstrates Asian street foods.
The "Street and Spicy" event also includes a tea pairing by Lynette Jee of Pacific Place Tea Garden, and a Skype visit from Los Angeles chef Susan Feniger, famous for her spicy street fare and her new cookbook, "Street Food." Guests will also enjoy a three-course meal.
On the lineup: Asian hummus crostini, Vietnamese-inspired pork lettuce wraps and make-ahead marinades and salad dressings.

Author serves up lecture on diets
Best-selling author Dr. John McDougall discusses the drawbacks of low-carb and high-carb diets in "The Diet Wars: The Time for Unification Is Now."
McDougall argues that both diets make people ill and destroy the planet, while a plant-based diet offers an alternative.

Club’s cupping includes BYO teas
The Hawaii Tea Club explores the world of black teas at a cupping event Nov. 17.
Byron Goo, blend master for The Tea Chest, will lead the tour of black teas from around the globe and share Purple Tea for the first time in Hawaii. Participants are also encouraged to bring their favorite black tea for cupping.
