Hawaii cornerback Mike Edwards has been medically cleared to play in Saturday’s game against Boise State at Aloha Stadium.
Edwards suffered an apparent injury to his left shoulder during a kickoff return against Fresno State this past weekend.
An MRI showed some abnormality in the shoulder.
“But it’s not major,” Edwards said. “It’s nothing I can’t handle.”
Edwards said he does not risk further injury if he were to play.
“It’s not going to get worse,” Edwards said. “It’s not even going to bother me. It’s a little something I might have a little pain here and there. The shoulder is not torn. It’s nothing like last year.”
Edwards suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder in the middle of the 2011 season. He played the rest of the way with discomfort. He underwent surgery this past January, forcing him to sit out most of spring training.
Edwards is the Warriors’ best cover defender. He is 12th nationally in kickoff returns.
“He’s going to be fine,” UH coach Norm Chow said.
Edwards said the diagnosis is a “huge blessing. I thank God the doctors gave me the go-ahead to play.”
Edwards said he wanted to play against Boise State, which dominated the Western Athletic Conference when both were members. This year, UH and BSU are members of the Mountain West Conference, although the Broncos will bolt for the Big East next year.
“It would hurt me more not to play in this game,” Edwards said. “Football is something I love. It’s more than a sport to me. It’s my life.”
