A couple was hospitalized today following an early-morning fire in a vacant Haleiwa home where fire officials believe they were residing illegally.

Firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire at 1:12 a.m. in the 59000 block of Pupukea Road. The fire started in a bedroom over a garage of the vacant dwelling which had no electrical service, Capt. Gary Lum, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman, said. The fire was extinguished at 2:20 a.m.

A man and a woman, who were squatting in the dwelling, were taken to Wahiawa General Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation, officials said. The woman also was treated for minor burns.

Damage was estimated at $125,000 and the fire’s cause is under investigation.
