Fire destroys 2-story wooden structure in Captain Cook

Hawaii County fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire in Captain Cook that destroyed a 2-story wooden garage/office/storage area early Sunday morning.

Firefighters arriving on scene after the 3:13 a.m. alarm found the structure fully engulfed in flames and neighbors attempting to hold back the blaze with garden hoses, a Fire Department news release said.

The two-story unit with a garage, kitchen, living room and office/storage space, was not attached to the main house and had collapsed before firefighters arrived.

All occupants of the home made it out safely, and no injuries were reported.

The fire was called under control around 4 a.m. and extinguished at 7:30 a.m., officials said.

Damage is estimated at $110,000. Firefighters said the fire could have been worse. They estimated it would have caused an additional $250,000 damage if it had spread.

The American Red Cross responded to the scene this morning to assist the residents with food and shelter needs.
