Man who died after lagoon trouble is ID’d
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office has identified a man whose body was found just before noon Sunday in the Hilton Hawaiian Village lagoon as Eduardo Gabriel, 50, of Los Angeles.
The cause of death was deferred Monday pending further investigation including toxicology and microscopic testing, which could take up to eight weeks.
Deputy Medical Examiner Masahiko Kobayashi said there were conflicting reports on what Gabriel had been doing, possibly paddleboarding or snorkeling, but he had waved his hands for help.
Police said the man had been snorkeling with his family.
He was taken in critical condition to Straub Clinic & Hospital, where he later died.
Suspect wanted in Aliamanu sex assault
Honolulu police are asking for the public’s help in finding a suspect in an Oct. 4 sex assault at the Aliamanu Military Reservation playground.
Police said a high-school-age girl was assaulted in the playground area between midnight and 2 a.m. Oct. 4.
CrimeStoppers released a sketch of the suspect Monday.
He is described as 6 feet 4 inches tall, weighing about 200 pounds, with short black hair that is wavy in the front. He is about 20 to 25 years old and has a tattoo of a cross on his left forearm.

Man arrested after illegally entering home
A Kaneohe woman was watching television Sunday afternoon when a man illegally entered her apartment, police said.
The 26-year-old victim screamed, locked herself in the bathroom and called police. The suspect was located a block from the break-in and arrested on suspicion of first-degree burglary.
Smoldering debris causes fire in cottage
A fire Monday afternoon destroyed a small cottage in Kihei, Maui, displacing a man who rented it.
A fire inspector found that the fire was accidentally caused by smoldering debris in a trash can in the living room.
The fire caused an estimated $35,000 in damage to the 700-square-foot structure and $10,000 to its contents, a fire official said.
The American Red Cross is assisting the man with shelter, food and clothing.
Maui firefighters responded to the fire at 3:40 p.m. at 3500 Kehala Drive. The fire was brought under control at 3:56 p.m.

Kula boy dies as vehicle flips on Valley Isle
A Kula, Maui, boy was killed late Sunday afternoon when the vehicle he was riding in overturned.
The Maui News reported that Connor Ellis, 12, died at the scene of the crash.
Police said a 44-year-old Kula resident who was driving the vehicle was treated and released from Maui Memorial Medical Center.
The accident happened when the driver swerved to avoid a tire on Pauwela Lighthouse Road and the vehicle overturned, police said.
