Hawaii Democratic Party Chairman Dante Carpenter says the party hopes that the dispute over who will be the next state speaker of the House can be settled by the Democratic caucus internally, without seeking a coalition with House Republicans. He says neither he nor the party sides with either faction. A Page B1 story Thursday reported that Carpenter said the party was hopeful that some members of a Democratic faction backing Rep. Joe Souki would ultimately back Calvin Say, the current speaker.
