Man charged with robbing driver who gave him ride in Hilo
A former Hilo man appeared in court Friday on charges he robbed a driver who had given him a ride in Hilo.
Timothy “Timmy” Russ Southern Jr., 26, who has no permanent address, was charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree assault and second-degree theft, Hawaii police said Monday. His bail was set at $85,000.
A 68-year-old man told police that about 1 a.m. May 25, he was assaulted and his wallet was stolen.
Police alleged that Southern had asked the man for a ride and the driver was taking Southern and a woman to a location in Hilo when the attack occurred.
The victim sustained a serious head injuries and was transferred to an Oahu hospital for treatment. Police said the victim reported the incident after returning to Hawaii island.
