Hawaii residents can help decide airliner paint job
Alaska Airlines’ “Paint the Plane” contest is now open for public voting online.
The three top entries were chosen from among some 2,700 entries from around the state, and were submitted by Sophia Cleek, a sixth grader at Kapolei Middle School, and Aaron Nee, a junior at Kaiser High School on the Island of Oahu, and by Izabela Hamilton, a senior at Seabury Hall on the Island of Maui.
Designs depict a voyaging canoe traversing the islands around various marine life; a voyaging canoe, hibiscus, and island chain with the words, “Spirit of the Islands;” and male and female hula dancers against a backdrop of ocean waves and mountain cliffs.
Residents have until Dec. 18 to vote, and results will help the airline determine the winner. The winning student will receive a trip for four to any Alaska Airlines destination and a $5,000 scholarship.
