A state judge sentenced a 20-year-old Waipahu man to eight years in prison this morning for killing his friend in a drunk-driving crash last year.

Kyer Valeros was facing a 20-year prison term for manslaughter for causing the death of Ervin Yanuara on Feb. 4, 2011. Yanuara, 20, of Waipahu, died after the Toyota Sienna Valeros was driving hit an embankment and flipped several times near the Kaonohi Street overpass.

Circuit Judge Rom Trader, however, imposed the eight-year term under a state law that gives defendants who are 21 and younger a break in sentencing.

The state says Valeros was drunk and speeding when he hit the embankment.

Yanuara, the front seat passenger, died from injuries he suffered when he was thrown from the vehicle. Five other passengers suffered injuries.
