Brigham Young-Hawaii coach Wilfred Navalta, who led the Seasiders to the national semifinals last week, was named the AVCA Division II coach of the year today.

It was the third time that Navalta earned the national honor but the first at the NCAA DII level. He was the NAIA coach of the year in 1996 and 1999.

In 27 years, Navalta compiled a record of 611-145. He told the Star-Advertiser after Friday’s loss that this was his final season. BYUH finished 25-4 overall, 16-0 in the PacWest, and fell in the national semifinal to eventual champion Concordia-St. Paul.

Three BYUH players were named to the West All-Region Team and also AVCA All-Americans: Ying Chun Chen, Shih Ting Chen, and Lauren Hagermeyer.

Navalta won eight NAIA national championships and two Division II titles, the last in 2002.
