LIHUE » The historic Hanalei Pier on Kauai is undergoing work.

The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources says it is working with the Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay to replace the existing shed while preserving the essence of the site.

The pier dates to 1892, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

The pier and shed were reconstructed 20 years ago but fell into disrepair. The department says a recent inspection found the shed must be replaced for public safety.

Work began this week, and the department says the project could take up to three months, weather permitting.

The Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay raised money for the work, and the department is providing about $50,000 for removal and disposal of the existing shed and materials.
