Homeless man held in alleged threat with machete

WAILUKU, MAUI >> A 47-year-old homeless man is being held in a Maui police station for allegedly threatening a man with a machete in a parking lot in Kahului.

The Maui News reports that Raul Gonzales is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail and has been charged with first-degree robbery.

Police say the incident occurred Monday in the parking lot of Cary & Eddie’s Hideaway restaurant. Gonzales is accused of threatening to cut the man if he didn’t hand over his wallet. He then allegedly knocked the victim to the ground and then ran away to a nearby beach area.

Police say the machete was found at the scene.
