A woman and her three grandchildren are safe after getting lost along the Kaunala Trail in Pupukea late Monday afternoon.

The four set out around 3 p.m. but were unable to make their way back by sundown.

Honolulu fire rescue personnel were alerted when the group failed to return home on time. They spent approximately three hours hiking along the trail before locating the missing hikers around 9 p.m., according to Honolulu Fire Department spokesperson Capt. Terry Seelig.

As of 9:30 p.m. the rescuers were still in the process of escorting the hikers off the trail.
