Mayor-elect Kirk Caldwell and the newly elected members of the City Council are to be sworn in during a joint ceremony Jan. 2 at the Mission Memorial Auditorium.
Associate Hawaii Supreme Court Judge Sabrina Shizue McKenna will administer the oath of office to Caldwell. Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald will swear in the new Council members, the mayor’s office said Monday in a news release.
The event, set for 10 a.m., marks the first joint inauguration of the mayor and Council, the release said.
"This joint swearing-in ceremony is more than symbolic to me," Caldwell said in a statement. "It is imperative that the mayor and the Council work closely together to get things accomplished for the public good."
In a memo to Council members, Chairman Ernie Martin said he believes the joint ceremony "can inspire public confidence" that the Council and mayor can work cooperatively.
New Council members to be sworn in are Ron Menor and Kymberly Pine. Also taking the oath of office will be re-elected Councilman Ikaika Anderson and Councilwoman Ann Kobayashi.
Bishop Mark Matsumoto will deliver the invocation, and the Rev. John Heidel will offer the closing prayer, the release said. New Cabinet members will then take their oath of office in the mayor’s conference room.
Caldwell has not yet announced names of Cabinet appointees.
Caldwell won a hotly contested race for Honolulu mayor by defeating former Gov. Ben Cayetano in a general election contest widely considered as a referendum on rail.
The mayor-elect has vowed to "do rail better," referring to concerns about the administration’s management of the planned $5.26 billion transit system, which has come under considerable scrutiny by Council members who have questioned expenditures on the project.
