Martin is Big West player of the week
Hawaii junior Kamilah Martin was named the Big West Conference Player of the Week on Monday for her efforts in helping the Rainbow Wahine basketball team go 2-1 in the Bank of Hawaii Invitational over the weekend.
It is the first BWC weekly honor for a Wahine hoops player since UH (4-7) rejoined the league in women’s sports for this season.
The 5-foot-11 forward shot 50 percent from the field and averaged 13.7 points and 10.7 rebounds in wins over LIU Brooklyn and Cincinnati and a one-point loss against Alabama. The preseason All-Big West honoree has five double-doubles through 11 games and is averaging team bests of 15.2 points and 10.2 rebounds.
Martin (formerly Kamilah Jackson) earned player of the week honors once each as a freshman and a sophomore in the Western Athletic Conference.
Against Cincinnati, she passed Kim Everett (747) for fourth in the program’s career rebounding list. Martin now has 761.
UH opens Big West play Thursday at Cal State Fullerton (4-8).
