Rushing waters, debris prompt warning at Waimea River mouth

Oahu Ocean Safety personnel posted warning signs at about noon today at the mouth of Waimea River, which is flowing very quickly and carrying debris into Waimea Bay.

People were told to stay away from the area because of the dangerous conditions.

“We actually saw a television set in the water,” said Shayne Enright, spokeswoman for the Department of Emergency Services.

“In an hour’s time it went from a small narrow waterway connecting to the bay,” she said. “Now it’s 50 yards-plus in width.”
