The Kapolei boys basketball team needed just a half of league play to remember what made it a winner last season.
Mililani is still trying to figure it out.
The sixth-ranked Hurricanes held the Trojans to a single point in the third quarter en route to a 47-28 win in the league opener for both teams.
Curtis Tavares led Kapolei with 15 points, Christopher Dillard had 13 and Zachary Reeves added nine as the host Hurricanes got all but three points from their starters. It was Dillard’s fifth straight game in double figures, and he earned his 10th point with 4:32 left in the second quarter.
While the past two meetings between the two teams came down to winning layups in the last seconds, this one was over midway through the third quarter. Kapolei held a slim 25-21 lead at the half.
“We didn’t play defense in the first half like we were capable of doing, and it upset me,” Kapolei coach Gary Ellison said. “That was our halftime adjustment, play defense like we are supposed to.”
The Hurricanes forced seven turnovers in the telling frame, and the Trojans scored on just one of their 15 possessions. The Hurricanes scored on seven of their 14 possessions to run the margin from four to 19.
“Coach wanted us to come out and play some high-intensity D,” Tavares said. “We kinda came out thinking they were just going to give us the game and coach got on us for that so after that we came together and did what we were supposed to.”
Mililani played without starters Sylvester Panoncillo and Riley Borges because of sprained ankles and four others because of other ailments. The Trojans were beaten up during December’s hectic tournament season, entering everyone they could.
“We didn’t do the things we did in the first half and it hurt,” Mililani coach Edward Gonzalez said. “It’s just the first game, don’t worry, we will get better.”
Mene Perese picked up the slack for the injured Trojans, leading the way with eight points on a variety of post moves. All of his points came in the first half and he was 0-for-4 from the line.
Kapolei was without forward Elijah Gipson, who is still recovering from a concussion. Gipson should be back next week but will probably miss Saturday’s home game against Nanakuli. Mililani visits Pearl City on Saturday.
