After a positioning year in 2012 that saw little in the way of new properties, 2013 figures to be busier in Las Vegas. The first major project debuts in early February with the opening of the Nobu hotel, a 180-room hotel-within-a-hotel at Caesars Palace. The former Lady Luck is scheduled to reopen as the Downtown Grand in March, and two new water parks are shooting to debut on Memorial Day. Other big projects include the opening of the LINQ retail and entertainment district toward the end of the year and the related overhaul and renaming of Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon at center Strip. Two wild cards are the Palms and Hooters. The Palms will bring on a new roster of bars and restaurants in 2013, while Hooters is rumored to be planning improvements that might be linked to a change in ownership.
New Club: Details of the long-rumored Cirque du Soleil/Light Group night-life collaboration have been released, with confirmation that LIGHT will open at Mandalay Bay in March.
SHe: A new restaurant, SHe by Morton’s, has opened in Crystals at
CityCenter. The combo steakhouse and nightclub
is partly owned by actress Eva Longoria.
Score!: The Score! sports-memorabilia exhibit has opened at Luxor. The developers worked with several sports organizations, including the football, basketball and hockey halls of fame, the U.S. Soccer Federation and the Las Vegas Motor Speedway to create its sports-themed displays and interactive experiences. Tickets are $28 for adults and $15 for kids under 12.
Question: On TV you could see that there was a giant crowd on the Strip on New Year’s Eve. Is there any count of how many people came out for the party?
Answer: There’s no official street count, but tens of thousands isn’t an exaggeration. Still, there were only 16 arrests made on the Strip and downtown combined. Pre-holiday estimates were that 300,000 people were coming to the city for the holidays.
