A Waianae High School student was arraigned Thursday morning in Circuit Court, accused of stabbing another student during a fight last week at school.
Ikaika Andrade, 18, is to be tried before Circuit Judge Colette Garibaldi beginning March 11 on a charge of second-degree assault.
He was initially arrested on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder as well as third-degree criminal property damage for allegedly damaging a vehicle after the Jan. 4 assault. The attempted murder charge was downgraded to second-degree assault when he was charged Saturday. The criminal property damage charge was dropped.
Andrade has been held in Oahu Community Correctional Center since the weekend, unable to post $25,000 bail. He was placed in the prison’s special holding unit due to alleged misconduct, a Department of Public Safety spokeswoman said. The incident is under investigation.
Andrade entered a plea of not guilty from the Kalihi facility through a video link.
Police said that at 12:23 p.m. Jan. 4, two male students began to argue over earphones at Waianae High School. The argument escalated, and during the fight Andrade allegedly stabbed the 19-year-old victim.
School staff intervened until police arrived and detained Andrade. The victim was taken in serious condition to a hospital.
Andrade had already been convicted of another assault charge in August and will be sentenced Aug. 19. He also was sentenced to six days’ confinement after being convicted of third-degree theft in September.
