After the Punahou girls basketball team lost to Maryknoll earlier in the season, there were whispers that the Spartans might rule Makiki.
After the Maryknoll boys beat Punahou on Wednesday, it seemed like a certainty.
Not so fast. Turner Wong made it clear on Thursday night that the Buffanblu won’t give up the neighborhood without a fight.
Tyra Moe hit a layup on a pass from Wong with seven seconds left in the second overtime and No. 7 Punahou beat No. 6 Maryknoll 46-44 at Punahou.
"It means a lot to come out here and protect our home court," Wong said. "We have had some turmoil this year and we just wanted to come out here and show everyone that we are still fighting for it."
The final 26 seconds were all Wong’s to win it or lose it for the Buffanblu. She dribbled around until there were 10 seconds left, began to drive and fired a laser to Moe directly beneath the basket. Maryknoll’s Crystie Wong got a look at a 3-pointer at the other end but it rimmed out as the buzzer sounded.
"My coach gave me the green light to go and I saw her inside and I knew she was going to make that shot," Turner Wong said. "I knew it."
Wong led the Buffanblu with 14 points, many of them coming in the fourth quarter and overtime. Wong missed a pair of free throws with three seconds left in the fourth quarter that might have won the game for the Buffanblu, and opened the first overtime with turnovers on Punahou’s first two possessions.
"It was a little mental, I was down on myself because of the free throws," Wong said. "But as a senior point guard I am supposed to show the girls how to act in those kinds of situations."
As much as Wong led the Buffanblu, who improved to 3-3 in the ILH while Maryknoll fell to 3-2, her teammates get just as much credit for her turnaround. Wong said her teammates and coaches immediately reminded her that mistakes happen and they had no doubt that overtime was her time.
"She is unbelievable," Punahou coach Courtney Robinson said. "She is the perfect example of a leader. She was a little down but her team was amazing, her team talked positive to her and helped her through it."
Maryknoll, which beat Punahou for the first time since 1999 earlier this year, was in position to do it again. The Spartans led 44-41 with 1:35 left in the second overtime after Alexis Delovio hit the second of two free throws after rising from the floor through two timeouts with a cramp.
But the Spartans, who controlled the game throughout, had a pair of lapses that set up Moe’s winner. First, they left Punahou’s Kaitlyn Waki alone in the corner for her second clutch 3-pointer of the game to make it 44-44 with 1:18 left. Then, with the ball and a chance to win, point guard Cianna Ochoco threw a pass to Delovio, who watched it fall out of bounds to set up Punahou’s heroics.
"We just make mistakes down the stretch," Maryknoll coach Chico Furtado said. "Not understanding what we are doing defensively, knowing that you can let Wong drive but don’t give up the 3. Young teams sometimes struggle with that, but we’ll get there. The effort was there."
