A homeless man was hospitalized with burns to his face and arms following a rubbish fire under the Nimitz Highway viaduct near the airport Monday night.

The cause of the fire, which was reported just before midnight near Kilhau Street, is under investigation. Four companies responded to the fire, which was extinguished at 2:31 a.m.

Hawaiian Telcom said the fire may be connected to a phone and Internet outage that continues into the morning.

A spokeswoman for the utility said the fire burned fiber optic cables under the viaduct.
