As a standout player at Kalaheo, Alika Smith learned from some of the current members of the Kailua coaching staff.
Now that he’s leading the Mustangs, Smith is passing along those lessons to his Kalaheo players.
One of the primary values he preaches to the Mustangs helped power Kalaheo to a 60-36 win over Kailua in an OIA East matchup with strong ties between the coaching staffs.
"What I stress to them is if we share the ball it’s hard to guard five guys the way we spread it and have our spacing available," Smith said. "When we get stagnant … our offense gets rusty real quick.
"The first quarter we moved the ball pretty well and we’re going to have open shots."
Kailua head coach Wally Marciel, a longtime figure in the Kalaheo program, missed the game while attending a funeral on Maui. Surfriders assistant Rocky Sauer, who spent 15 years on the Kalaheo staff, took over lead duties for the Surfriders on Friday night.
Kailua assistants Kelii Tilton and Kimo Makaula are both Kalaheo graduates. On the other end, Kalaheo assistant coach Tim Harrison led Kailua to the Division II state championship in 2009.
"We had to battle," said Smith, who played for Sauer during his All-State career. "They’re going to contend for the D-II state championship, I believe.
"We want the best for the kids. … They’re very knowledgeable and I think they’re in good hands."
Kalaheo, ranked second in this week’s Star-Advertiser poll, remained undefeated in OIA East play at 6-0. Kailua, which will compete for the OIA White title in the postseason, moved to 3-3.
Kalaheo guard Josh Ko scored 10 of his 14 points in the first quarter and Kalei Zuttermeister hit for 16 in the second half to lead all scorers.
But the Mustangs’ willingness to move the ball led to open looks from outside and lanes to the basket. Ko hit two 3-pointers in the first quarter and Zuttermeister added three from long range in the second half as the Mustangs pulled away.
"(Smith) told us to basically push the ball," Ko said. "All of us got rebounds, pushed it up as soon as we can and found the open guy. Tonight was one of those nights everyone was hitting open shots."
Kirk Ronolo Jr. led Kailua with 16 points, but the Surfriders struggled through a rough second quarter when Kalaheo held Kailua without a field goal and opened a 26-11 halftime lead.
"You learn from any game you play, you get better and learn from it," Sauer said. "We had a tough night, our shots (were) not falling and their shots were. They shot the ball well tonight."
