The public was invited to attend the grand opening of the new University of Hawaii West Oahu Campus in Kapolei. There was free entertainment, food trucks and family activities to showcase the latest in 21st Century higher education. This is the central courtyard. The tall building on the left is the library.

The number of students attending the University of Hawaii’s 10 campuses is down about 2 percent from last spring.

More than 55,000 students are enrolled in classes at the school’s three universities and seven community colleges.

Enrollment at six of the community colleges declined compared to last year. Only Kauai Community College reported more students.

The university said Friday just over 19,000 students are enrolled at the flagship Manoa campus. That number is little changed from last year.

The recently established West Oahu campus reported a 22 percent jump in enrollment to more than 1,900 students.
